Here's the final Sarah Silverman painting along with the origianl sketch. It's acrylic on wood with a little bit of colored pencil. Thanks to Fred Harper for letting me use his large-format scanner.
This painting will be hanging at "Faces and Names"- 159 w. 54th St. between 6th & 7th Ave. from now until the end of time.

you translated the hair textures from pencils to paints very well.

Thanks, Jason- that was the hardest part; I used small brushes at first, and then went over it with colored pencil. I still like the hair in the sketch better, though.
yeah. it's tough getting those finer details in paint. it's pretty much why i don't paint!
Yeh, I agree, nice job, but I still like the pencil sketch more. Somehow it captures her more, but they're both great.
Thanks. That could be one benefit of scanning in an original sketch- if the sketch is exactly as you like it. There are always differences that come up in the transferrance from the drawing to the painting.

Oh, I forgot to ask you, Justin- what about the mic in the painting? That's better than in the sketch, don't you think?
It's hard to tell as the sketch is very small. I looked for a larger ver. of it on your site but I couldn't find it. The mic looks nice, so I'm guessing it's more detailed than the pencil ver. One of my other reasons for liking the pencil ver. better is that I like the tones you've built up more..her skin feels 'ruddier' in the painting/pastel drawing...I think there are smoother transitions with the pencils. Also it seems more defined around her arms and hands in the pencil ver.
I went back and found the other two drawings you did of her, which I think capture her essence more-visually and characterwise. But this one is stilll very good.
Still, you should see it in person.
There is no pastel in it- it's acrylic and a little colored pencil.
It's obviously much easier to build up the tones in pencil- at least for me- than in acrylic.
I remember seeing that original sketch up close and personal, and let me tell you, it positively oozes with vitality!. The picture pales in comparison. Im even more amazed you were able to make the transition to paint so smoothly. Definitley a testament to your skill level. Although, I must say i like the pencil drawing better.
Yeah, everyone likes the drawing better- including me. I was a little more exacting in that one, and I lost a little bit of control when I tried to duplicate it in Acrylic. The challenge is always to keep the freshness of the original and add upon it, but it's not always easy to do. The one thing that I think came out better in the painting is the head of the mic. One night we'll have to get a drink at Faces and Names, and you can check out the painting in person.
