Steve Brodner's animation

Check out Steve Brodner's latest "Naked Campaign" at http://www.newyorker.com/online/video/nakedcampaign/tippingpoints

He brilliantly uses caricature to make statements about the campaign, our society and politics in general.

Steve used to (and still is- indirectly)be my teacher about 14 years ago when I took a class at SVA.

Yeah, I took a continuing Ed. class in about 1993 or so after calling him up out of the blue to compliment him on his latest illustration. We talked for a bit and he told me about the class he was about to start teaching. It was more of an illustration class rather than a caricature class. I was there to do caricature, but I think I was one of the only ones. I did the David Letterman watercolor caricature while I was there (on the right hand side of my blog).
He was a good teacher- although I think he's probably a better teacher now; I sat in on one of his slide show lectures a couple of years ago and it was really well done. It was more politically motivated, and centered more on caricature.
The only time we disagreed was when he was really trying to teach how to do the necessary prep work to prepare an illustration, and I was exploring the more spontaneous, direct approach to illustration an d caricature at the time. I was doing more "blind contour" caricatures at the time and felt that I could get more interesting, unexpected results. It was hit or miss, but when it hit, it really hit. I also found I wasn't getting any illustration work doing those, so that might have contributed to me fazing it out, although I do incorporate it into my sketches sometime. So, I kind of came around to his way of thinking in general- it's more of an illustrative approach rather than a "fine-art" approach.
All in all, it was a good experience, and I'm still in touch with him to this day.
